Vital energy and Chakras
The vital energy that overlaps to the physical body, is formed by a big number of reticules. There exist, however, three main conduits, linked to the nostrils, by which circulate the energies of Prana - Sushumna is the central conduit, Píngala is the one of the right nostril, through where circulates the "positive" energy, Yang, and Ida is the one of the left nostril through where circulates the "negative" energy, Yin. Those energy conduits connect, along the central nervous system, to 7 stalks that have the appearance of a flower and that receive from the Oriental the name of Chakras.
Chakras - In Eastern philosophy, this word refers to centers of collection and distribution of Prana, which is the cosmic energy in all its manifestations in the universe. In man, she traveled to these centers called chakras which are situated along the spine, a body more subtle than the physical, called the vital body or etheric double. These chakras distribute prana to the internal organs.
A detailed explanation about the various bodies of man, including the vital and a description of the chakras and what is Prana, the reader may find in my book "Man and the Universe."
These centers of force possess a series of petals and each petal elaborates energy of Prana according to his nature. Then, each center of force elaborates differentiated energies, and those energies will be distributed to certain glands and certain organs. For instance:
The Base Chakra - Muladhara, located in the coccygeal area, transmits those energies to the genital organs.
The Sacral Chakra - Swadhistana, located to the left of the abdomen, transmits energies for the spleen.
The Solar Plexus Chakra - Manipura, located in the area of the navel, transmits energies to the intestines, liver and pancreas.
The Heart Chakra - Anahata, located a little to the left of the thorax, transmits energies for the lungs and heart.
The Throat Chakra - Vishuddha, located in the front part of the neck, transmits energies for the thyroid.
The Brow Chakra - Ajna, located in the middle of the forehead, transmits energies to the pituitary gland, or hypophysis.
The Crown Chakra - Sahasrara, located in the high of the head, transmits energies to the pineal, or epiphysis.
Although the flow of Prana in the human organism is intimately linked to the breathing flow, Pranayama doesn't consist of dominating the breathing, but only and exclusively in controlling the responsible Cosmic energy for the action of breathing. It is not the breathing that produces the movement of the lungs, but, exactly on the contrary, it is the movement of the lungs, provoked by Prana, that produces the breathing.
Prana is a cosmic energy in manifestation and any expression of force is always produced by her. So much the nervous force, as the emotional and mental they constitute manifestations of Prana. Without Prana it would not be possible for us to think nor to exercise any mental activity or to feel any emotion. It is Prana that models the mental matter and it is her that makes possible her stoppage.
There exists only one Prana that manifests in all the plans of the Nature, carrying out, in each one, different functions. It is like the electricity that is unique but to each appliance is manifested in a particular way.
Pranayama forms a game of energies that enter by the nostrils and they proceed for the central conduit going to reach the chakra Root, or Muladhara and by the lateral ones will reach The Sacral Chakra, or Swadhistana, that elaborates the received energies and distributes them for the organism.
In the flow of energies that penetrates the nostrils vibrate what the Orientals call Tattvas, which are subtle forces of Nature. Every two hours, 4 Tattvas vibrate in one nostril. If we pay attention, we find that, every two hours we breathe more intensely by one of the nostrils - 80% by one, say, the right and the left 20%. After, we pass to breathe 80% by the left and 20% by the right. It happens also that in these two hours, every half hour, varies the wavelength of the air expelled. When the wave of expiration is close to the nostrils it is because the Vayu Tattva is vibrating. If at that time we emit a desire for anything connected to the air element, it takes place because Vayu is connected to the air. The wavelength expelled increases progressively every half hour, as pass to vibrate Tejas, Apas and Pritivi. Then, the wave of expiration will shorten until it disappears. While traveling from one nostril to another, there is a moment, a few seconds, in which the two nostrils vibrate at Akasha, a more refined Tattva. When the nostrils vibrate at Akasha, there is a perfect balance. And that is when the disciples to take advantage for the perception of their spiritual nature. While vibrating the left nostril, or the right, and in them vibrate the 4 Tattvas, the man will never have spiritual awareness, because these Tattvas give material consciousness. After this passage by the central canal, there vibrate back to the 4 Tattvas, but now, through the other nostril. Thus, these energies, as they enter through the centers of power, sometimes will give an energy “positive ", or solar, if conducted through the right nostril and sometimes a "negative" energy, or lunar, if conducted through the left nostril. It means that sometimes works as a builder of tissues, and sometimes as destroyer the useless tissues.
In this is that substantiates all elemental magic, only on breathing.
When the nostrils are working wrong, when the exchange of the cycles does
not occur properly, health problems arise.
Whoever controls the play of energies hardly gets sick. When medicine
discover this game, can heal by the direction of the energies, by the
homeopathy and by nutrition because foods are linked to the Tattvas.
As the man generally
has a predominance of lunar energy, it is advisable to start the practice by
the Pranayama solar, called Surya Bedhana and that consists in always aspire
by the right and drop down by the left, retaining the air in the lungs after
inhaling and retaining the breath at the end of expiration.
